It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Sam Dust, the erstwhile frontman of 00’s brainy dance-rockers Late of the Pier. Dust released one single as LA Priest in 2007 and then it was radio silence following Late of the Pier’s demise in 2010. During that time, Dust travelled, did scientific research and worked on private musical projects. The result of that adventurous spirit is the genreless electronic art-pop of Dust’s debut album as LA Priest. “Oino” bounces on an electro dub reggae beat and Dust’s squirrelly, digitally manipulated vocal. “Party Zute / Learning to Love” looks to acid house for inspiration as it evolves from a cute instrumental to a bangin’ party track. “Lady’s in Trouble With the Law” sounds like an ’80s R&B ballad as played by a ’90s PC, with Dust’s heavily treated vocals dripping water all over a supple groove. It’s a delightful listen that’s just as eclectic as it is rewarding, and perhaps the best thing we’ve ever heard from Dust.
